Above Beyond Below - Seaham 2020

Painted on the side of the Volunteer Arms pub, the sole surviving building of a traditional mining terrace demolished during the post-war clearances, the mural is part of the Above Beyond Below community art project, conceived and designed by Jamie Holman, produced by Alex Zawadski, and commissioned by East Durham Creates.

The imagery draws on the visual language of historic trade union banners and commemorates the miners of Seaham, Dawdon, and Vane Tempest. It reflects the solidarity of a community shaped by profound change, celebrating Seaham’s mining heritage and ongoing influence while contributing to the town’s permanent public legacy.
