Cosmo Sarson studied fine art at The Byam Shaw School of Art where he was mentored by the Turner Prize nominated painter Peter Doig and political dissident artist Peter Kennard. Graduating in 1995 he subversively sold his degree show as advertising space to brands like Paul Smith and Swatch, rendering their ads in oil paint on a rotating billboard.
In 1997, Sarson appeared on Channel 4’s Board Stupid to discuss his latest paintings of extreme sports, leading to his first major solo show at the Levi’s flagship store in Regent Street, London. These works were later featured in Scrawl: Strange Graphics and Dirty Characters, one of the first books to document the emerging street art scene at the time.
Over the next few years, he exhibited alongside figures like Alexander McQueen, collaborated with the photographer Rankin for Dazed & Confused, received sponsorship from Sony and was commissioned by Sky Sports.
At the turn of the millennium he took an extended hiatus from his art to work as an art director in advertising before transitioning to the film industry as a freelance scenic artist. 5 years later he found a studio in Dalston and began painting for himself again.
In 2010, his oil painting Jesus Breakdancing in the Vatican went viral, crashing his website with visitor demand. Two years later, he won a public art competition and painted a 30ft mural of the same subject in Bristol, gathering headlines around the world.
In 2020, he painted his biggest mural to date on Brighton Palace Pier, one of the UK's top tourist destinations.
In 2022 he won another public art competition for a permanent art installation in Brighton. Situated in a prominent position on Brightons skyline it can be seen from the center of the city.
He has exhibited at home and abroad, notably at the Saatchi gallery and Scope Art Miami and held his last solo show at the Pure Evil gallery in Shoreditch, London.
Cosmo maintains his fine art practice in tandem with his work as a freelance scenic artist in the film industry and has worked on over 40 productions.
