EDWARD STREET QUARTER - BRIGHTON 2022
Cosmo Sarson was commissioned to design an artwork that would serve as a landmark and reflect Brighton’s historical connection to the sea, for the largest neighbourhood development in the city in 25 years.
The finished work is a reproduction of a smaller oil painting created in the artist’s studio, scaled up to a height of 10 metres. The image was digitally printed onto porcelain tiles and kiln-fired into the glaze to ensure UV resistance and weatherproofing.
A fishing net motif adds a three-dimensional quality. Fabricated from laser-cut steel and aged with a copper verdigris finish, it is mounted slightly above the rusted background to create a subtle drop shadow, giving the work depth and tactile presence.
